In 1916 there was a large sale of land in Witherslack due to the death of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Williams, a widow who lived on Holme Island. She owned a large amount of Witherslack and Meathop. She was born Jane Barrow the only child of John Barrow, and married William Williams of Builth, and having outlived him died in July 1915. She is buried in the large chest tomb at the right hand side of the doorway of Witherslack Church. She was very generous in her lifetime and gave money and land for the building of Meathop Sanatorium and for the row of shops in Grange- over-Sands.

The sale was advertised in a large (A4) size book as 'Valuable Farms and Other Properties' and was organised by M.B. Hodgson & Sons Auctioneers. The sale included Low Wood, with 70 acres, Moss Howe, Key Moss with Cullentrees with 114 acres, Slate Hills and Bark House with 63 acres, Kirket Nook with 50 acres, High Fell End with 37 acres, Long Howe End with 12 acres. The Palace Freehold dwelling house and Joiners Shop, several cottages, moss land and, closes of land. The sale realised over £16,035, which was a great deal of money in those days.
