Witherslack Sports Committee
Witherslack Sports are believed to have been held for most of the century, except during the two world wars. After the first world war they were held periodically in the field below the Post Office. The usual races were held plus Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling. The fell race was run to the top of Blunt Howe. For a short period after World War Two they were held in Mr. H. Hodgsons field above the village on the left-hand side of the road leading to the church. They used to have hound trails also.
In the 1960's the Annual Sports Day was moved to Dean Barwick School field. The fell race is now to the top of the Noddle and afterwards tea is served to both children and parents in the Church Hall. For many years the sports were followed by a dance in the evening.
The Sports Committee still organise two dances, the Carnival Dance and the Valentine Dance. The money raised is for the prizes on Sports Day for the children and to provide a Supper for the over 60's of Witherslack and Meathop. There is a Committee of22 members and they all work hard to make the events most enjoyable and successful.
