Whitbarrow Lodge

Whitbarrow Lodge is not strictly in Witherslack, but the family have always gone to St. Paul's Church and have associated with Witherslack in every way. Whitbarrow was built in the 1720's and was sold by William Bowness to William Farrer Ecroyd in 1865. The sale included most of Meathop and a portion of Witherslack.

William Farrer Ecroyd JP was granted the estate on the agreement that he dropped the last name of Ecroyd, because his uncle had no sons and he wanted the Farrer name to be continued. His son William Farrer continued the line with his son William Maurice Farrer who was very generous to St. Paul's Church. His son, Trevor Maurice Farrer CBE, works on several committees in the village. Most of the estate has now been sold, in many cases to the tenant at the time.
