The Derby Arms
The Derby Arms built in 1821 on the turnpike road, which was the main road between Kendal and Ulverston at that time, which then became the A590 to Barrow.
In 1981 the A590 road was built as a dual carriageway by-passing the Derby Arms on to a side road. There were objections from farmers at Faraway and Ulpha who said they could not reach their stock easily enough. It took a few letters to and fro but they got their way and a total of three underpasses were built. Its just as well they did because traffic on this road has increased so much in later years it would have been impossible without them.
The photograph shows members of the North Lonsdale Hounds (around 1953) meeting at the Derby Arms before going out. It always hunted on foot. There were staghounds at Oxenholme before the second world war, and an otter hunt at Dallam until the 1960's.
